The Effect of Music

Posted by in Musings

I am an avid music listener.  I listen to Spotify, which I’ve already raved about before, anytime I am studying, walking to/from school alone, cleaning my room….pretty much any waking minute.  When I’m not listening to Spotify, I’ll check out Im1music.net or youtube for the latest songs.  I have almost 5 pairs of headphones (the latest edition being my Beats Solo, by Dr. Dre), 5.1 computer speakers, Panasonic Stereo System and a portable BlockRocker, so I have quite a lot of variety in terms of mediums I can use to listen to my music.  Needless to say, I love music.

The wonderful thing about music is that whoever you may be, music, and more specifically certain songs,  can elicit strong emotional responses.  They can make us nostalgic for past; they can remind us of loved ones (or ex-loved ones); they can make us sing and dance on top of a table.  In essence, songs become inextricably linked with specific emotional feelings or life events.

Thus I decided to compile a list of a few songs and the memories they evoke within me. Enjoy.

Joe – I wanna know : Reminds me of my best friend Jon who first told me about it in 8th grade, and a girl I had big crush on then that did not like me in the slightest.

My List

KCi and JoJo – All my Life : My frist dance ever with a girl, my close friend Kristi

Dashboard Confessional – So Long Sweet Summer : the last day of summer before I went to college….and the day my high GF and I brokeup.

Jason Derulo – Ridin’ Solo – it was the first song I heard after an amazing morning where I met a wonderfully inspiring cancer patient, I got a med school interview and I received a raise at my job.

Daft Punk – Digital Love : just seems to sum up all post-2 am college parties

Musiq Soulchild – Just Friends (sunny) : serenading my high school girlfriend with my best friend and his date before every high school dance (also my most favorite song of all time…youtube video is embedded)

Latif – I don’t wanna hurt you : I was listening to this song when I first fell in love (ironic, I know)

Script – Breakeven : my first time in new orleans, riding in the back seat of the car from delicious dinner

Pit Bull ft. Ne-yo : the first song my current girl recommended to me, and I realized we were gonna get along just fine :)

Conclusion

Honestly, the list could go on for days because I have a photgraphic memory when it comes to songs and the relationships they have.  I can remember when was the first time I heard, who first told me about it, and any other special connections I may have with the song. I don’t necessarily have any additional thoughts on the matter, but it was enjoyable nonetheless to reminisce and reflect.  So to continue the spirit of things, I’m currently listening to Kris Allen – Live Like We’re Dying….just as a reminder the spiritual power of music.
